History Raiders Halt U-Boats in Zeebrugge (2003)
Relive the daring and costly operation that blockaded a fleet of German submarines within their harbor.
It was one of the most remarkable naval operations of World War I, a full-frontal assault on a port whose defenses were the match of any on earth. But the payoff--trapping large numbers of German U-boats inside a harbor without any avenue of escape--was worth it.
Drawing on eyewitness accounts form survivors, expert testimony, rare photos and military documents from the battle, GREATEST RAIDS relives the events of April 22nd, 1918, when a flotilla of British warships led by the cruiser HMS Vindictive set sail for the fortified harbor of Zeebrugge, defended by coastal batteries and a deadly mole, a seawall bristling with guns. The most important ships in the attacking force, however, were unarmed. Two old ferries served as blockships, to be sunk at the harbor mouth and trap the German submarines inside. At a cost of 600 killed and wounded out of the total crew of 1,300 taking part in the raid, they achieved their goal, and the sheer audacity of the operation helped lift morale during a dark time in the conflict.
