Ships in Scale 1998-06

Mention whaling and visions of the Charles W. Morgan flash to mind, for she is America"s mast famous whaling ship. The golden era of American Whaling ended with the Civil War. when the New England whaling fleet passed into romantic history. Taking the fleet"s place was a new era in whaling technology that began with the development in Norway of the newfangled "steam whaler." In 1862 Norwegian Sven Foyn built the Spes Ei Fides (Hope & Faith) in Oslo. The Spes was a small steam-powered vessel equipped with a cannon that fired an explosive tipped harpoon, and a large winch to work the whale line. The little whaler was fast enough to catch the whale, and this type of vessel became known as a "catcher."
